The Inside Scoop on Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: they are necessary for human health, but the body cannot make them.  You have to get them through food and supplements.  Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafood including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils.  Omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development.  They may also help to reduce the risk of heart disease.  Omega-3 fatty acids may also be used for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, macular degeneration and symptoms of pms.

Dosing for fish oil supplements should be based on the amount of EPA and DHA, not on the total amount of fish oil. Supplements vary in the amounts and ratios of EPA and DHA. A common amount of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil capsules is 0.18 grams (180 mg) of EPA and 0.12 grams (120 mg) of DHA. Five grams of fish oil contains approximately 0.17 – 0.56 grams (170 -560 mg) of EPA and 0.072 – 0.31 grams (72 – 310 mg) of DHA. Different types of fish contain variable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oils contain approximately 9 calories per gram of oil.  Do not take more than 3 grams daily of omega-3 fatty acids from capsules without the supervision of a health care provider, due to an increased risk of bleeding.  Fish oil capsules should not be used in children except under the direction of a health care provider.

At Triangle Vitamins, we recommend Whole Mega by NEW CHAPTER.

New Chapter offers a whole food approach to fish oil.  Whole Mega is 100% wild caught salmon oil.  Natural salmon oil contains Astaxanthin and a balance of vital Omega 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9’s, often referred to as “good fats.” These good fats, which include two essential fatty acids the human body cannot produce on its own, serve to nourish brain, heart, eye, and kidney tissues.  They have been shown to benefit cardiovascular, immune system, brain, and digestive health.  Come in today and try a sample for free!

Reviews:

  • “This oil is easy to take and has no after taste, and very little if held in the mouth too long. I lowered my bad cholesterol a few points, something I have not been able to do even with lots of exercise.”
  • “My aesthetician reminded me that if I am not going to eat fish, please consider fish oils. Most burp up for me but I have found New chapter products to be good for, and with, me and this is no exception. I love this Product! Thank you ! My skin thanks you too!”
  • “What a truly outstanding product. I have taken other fish oil capsules in the past but none that have made me feel overall as good as these do. The whole New Chapter line is absolutely the best ever. In the past I have had great difficulty in taking any kind of vitamins as they would either make my stomach hurt or give me an awful headache. There is not a single New Chapter supplement that I take that does this to me – what a relief to find a line that really delivers what it promises as well as having no adverse reaction for me. They have truly turned my life around.”
